4 weeks, 38 volunteers, incredible donations and countless hours and we finally have a community garden!!  Of course there are still things that need to be done but we are ready for the garden to blossom with life. We are so excited to see what the growing season will bring!

Just one of the wonderful gifts from the many donations from businesses who have supported the garden. We were able to start planting Tomatoes, egg plants, cabbage and more in garden plots designated for growing food for our chosen charities.

The first plant has been planted!!

Our garden shed is moving into its new home. Thanks guys.

Not even in our wildest dreams did we ever think we would be blessed with a sign. Were we ever surprised when we were gifted with a sign like this!!

As we finished up at the end of a very hot, busy day the clouds started to roll in and prepared to bless the ground with some much needed rain. Some of the plot renters managed to sneak in some planting just in time as well.

So what is next? A fence to install, 2 more rain barrels, and more planting. Nothing our volunteers can't handle.

Hello everyone

I thought I though I would  share some sites and books that may help you as you begin to plan growing in your plots. For some of you this information will not be needed for you already have things ready to go and know what you want to do. Yet I am sure for some this venture is new and any advise will come in handy. Well that is exactly what a community garden is about, learning together. I will post all  this information on our  Facebook page too( Flamborough Baptist Community Garden).

So  here are some great books to buy or pick up at the library:
Grow All You Can Eat in 3 Square FeetOne Magic Square

This blog is all on square foot gardening:

She has documented her journey of learning to garden by the foot.

This list would not be complete without adding a few Youtube clips:

Also here is an amazing online square foot garden planner to try. Set your garden size and click on the plant you wish to plant,, drag the picture into the garden picture and it will tell you how much to plant in each square! How great is that!

So, hopefully I have not overwhelmed you but instead gave you tools to inspire!
But do not let these guidelines worry you. That is all they are is guidelines. They are not rules. Gardening should always be enjoyable. So try what you wish, see what happens. It's all a learning experience.

We are so excited about all the fantastic work that has happened over the last few days! We had teams, moving dirt to level the area, building boxes and today laying down the beds and filling them for planting. These garden beds are sitting on a warm, sunny hill just begging to be filled with seeds and young plants!

Garden Finally Underway!

May 2015 and the garden is finally underway! So exciting! With much planning and with many volunteers a dream is coming true. Flamborough Baptist Church is hosting a community garden. We have been so richly blessed to have such a lovely location with farmland and bush surrounding us and with plenty of land. It was a shame not to share it. Now we will have a place the community can come to when they wish, a place we can enjoy nature and a place to learn together. Now comes the tricky part of having it ready in just over a week! If I am not too exhausted, I will keep you posted as we go. Hope you can come along with us as we begin this journey of "growing together."

Check out a couple pictures from last week's ground breaking!

Thanks for visiting!

Community Garden

Do you enjoy gardening but need more space than you have in your backyard? Would you love to harvest and eat your own vegetables? Would you like to teach your children about growing flowers? The Flamborough Baptist Community Garden has plots available and we'd love to have you join us, whether you're a veteran gardener or a novice who is eager to learn.

The community garden is located on Flamborough Baptist Church grounds, Concession 5 East, just down from Terra's Garden Centre. Each gardener receives a garden plot, in which you may grow annual plants such as tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, beans, peas, squash, or flowers. Gardeners are not permitted to plant perennials or invasive plants and the garden is chemical-free. Each gardener is responsible for planting, weeding, watering and harvesting his or her own plot.

Plot rentals are $15 for a 4'x12 plot( or $25 for two) and $20 for a 4'x16 plot. There will be a $10.00  clean up deposit added to this fee and refunded at the end of the growing season if your plot is properly cleaned up.

In the next couple of weeks everyone who has registered will receive a plot assignment. In early June, we will hold a planting day for those members who would like to meet their fellow gardeners. If you're a first-time gardener and would like some advice about how to plant your seeds, there will be plenty of people available to help.
